Join us to discuss Fahrenheit 451

How did I ever get out of high school and college without reading Ray Bradbury's classic? File this under "better late than never."

The library's teen book discussion group selected Fahrenheit 451, and we'll discuss it Wednesday, December 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Young Adult department. There's plenty of time to read it (it's not long, I promise), and you can contact me at 359-8334 to pick up a copy. There are graphic novel and audiobook versions of the book, too.

See you at the library!

Greetings

Hello, teens! For those of you who haven't met me yet, I'm Kris, your (sort of) new young adult librarian. I've been getting settled in the past couple of months, learning the ropes at the library, and finding my way around town. I hope to continue using this space to discuss library events, fun stuff, and books. It's open for you to make respectful comments. I look forward to sharing ideas with you!

Signing Off

Dear Readers (whoever you are!),

This will be my last post as librarian with the New Ulm Public Library. I'm heading back to my hometown to work with the library system headquartered there.

I hope you will continue to enjoy and support the New Ulm Public Library, and be sure to voice your suggestions, concerns, and general thoughts to staff members here (or anonymously in our suggestion box). We're always eager to better serve the community.

As for parting thoughts? Don't overlook non-fiction, even if you don't have to write a paper, check out a zine even if (especially if!) it is weird or unsettling, and make sure you're getting the most from your library--it has lots to offer, and is full of staff people who want to help.

All the best,
Librarian Lori

National Poetry Month

It's that time of year again! Submit your favorite poems, original or not, and I'll post them around the YA area.

Visit the website of the Academy of American Poets (the group that started National Poetry Month in 1996) for all things poetry.

Your Library in February

What's new at the library? Well, the music CDs and some of the audiobooks have moved, just a little. You'll now find the music CDs right across from the elevator doors (or to the left of the mural) on the second floor. The fiction audiobooks have not moved, but the non-fiction audiobooks now take up the entire far shelf. The signs are accurate. We did this after discarding all the music cassettes. Truly, the end of an era.

Event Ideas

What events would you like to see the library host for young people and for the general public? What kinds of events might you attend?

The Library's Computers

Our Library Director is working on improving your Internet access at the library. Currently, the computers available for public Internet access are often slo-o-ow or out-of-order completely, and there's not much to be done to improve that short of a total overhaul.

If you've used our computers (or if even if you don't, but would if they worked better!), please share your comments or suggestions here. We may then be able to use your feedback to further the cause of getting better Internet access at the library. Thanks!
